Overview
Air conditioning maintenance and service can provide even bigger savings for homeowners. Often, our technicians find small problems that can be fixed quickly and inexpensively during the tune-up process. If neglected, these same issues can be very costly.
For example, a refrigerant leak can be repaired easily and affordably if found early; however, if the leak goes undetected, it can drain the refrigerant and burn up the compressor. A compressor can cost $1,000 or more to replace. Also, before the compressor fails, it will run inefficiently for a while, resulting in hundreds of dollars more on your electric bills.

Common Cooling Problems
-
Refrigerant LeaksIf your air conditioner is low on refrigerant, either it was undercharged at installation or it leaks. If it leaks, simply adding refrigerant is not a solution. A trained technician should fix any leak, test the repair, and then charge the system with the correct amount of refrigerant. Remember that the performance and efficiency of your air conditioner is greatest when the refrigerant charge exactly matches the manufacturer’s specification, and is neither undercharged nor overcharged. Refrigerant leaks can also be harmful to the environment.
-
Controller FailureThe compressor and fan controls can wear out, especially when the air conditioner turns on and off frequently, as is common when a system is oversized. Because corrosion of wire and terminals is also a problem in many systems, electrical connections and contacts should be checked during a professional service call.
-
Frozen CoilA frozen coil often indicates an issue with the airflow, such as restrictions caused by filthy air filters or obstructed return air ductwork. Frozen indoor coils could also be the result of low refrigerant.
-
Inadequate MaintenanceIf you allow filters and air conditioning coils to become dirty, the air conditioner will not work properly, and the compressor or fans are likely to fail prematurely.
-
Outdoor ElementsThere are several elements in the outdoors that can cause your AC to fail. Debris from trees, lawns, pets, plants, etc can hinder the operation of your AC equipment.
-
Faulty WiringShotty, haphazard or uncertified A/C wiring is risky and a possible fire hazard. Bad wiring can prevent the system from getting power or can trip the circuit breaker.A burning smell is a serious issue because it could indicate the start of an electrical fire. Receptacles or connected electrical cords that are warm to the touch are also a sign of an electrical problem. Do not use the receptacle until the situation has been repaired.
